Newfound Joy
Alex could hardly believe his ears when his beloved Gia said what she had just said. She had summoned him to their little part of the circus caravan and, in a few simple words, punctuated by that beautiful Italian accent, she had told him:
"Alex, I'm pregnant,"
Alex's jaw dropped for a few moments, but it was quickly replaced by extreme joy. He held Gia close to him.
"That's wonderful," the former zoo lion said.
Gia nodded, excited to become a mother, but nervous as well. Alex attempted to reassure her. Though still a bit nervous. Time passed, and eventually, Gia's pregnancy became obvious to all. At the moment, they were showing everyone.
"Are you eating too much?" Mort asked.
Gia only glared, otherwise ignoring the bothersome little lemur and his annoying question. The comment also earned Mort a smack upside the head from Maurice. Time passed once more, and it was time for the cub to be born. As Gloria attended Gia inside the chamber that had been set up for the occasion, Alex waited nervously outside with the others, on the verge of having a panic attack. Finally, Gloria emerged and announced that Alex was now the father of a healthy new son. Alex rushed over to his mate's side. In that moment, Alex got his first look at his newborn son. The cub had the fur color and facial traits of a lion, but the spots of a jaguar. Alex smiled.
"Oh Gia, he's beautiful, just like you," he said.
Gia smiled.
"And I hope that he is as handsome as you when he grows up," she said.
Alex gave a great smile as he held the cub for the first time.
"What are we going to name him?" he asked.
Gia thought for a long moment. Then, it came to her.
"Marcus," she said.
After a couple of days, it was time for Marcus to be introduced to the others. The introduction went perfectly, except for Mort wanting to touch the baby's feet. After it was all over, Alex and Gia went to watch the sunset. Gia looked at her new son with pride.
"My son, Circus Zaragoza's bright new star!" she said, rocking Marcus gently.
Alex smiled. He knew that these were going to be the best times of his life.
