The only thing that I can think of is it involving Humphrey learning to be an alpha as he and Kate become the new leaders.

Yes.
Anyway, so we're pretty much agreed on our plot. We could also add that there's a test for Humphrey in the form of, possibly Kate being pregnant and a particularly harsh winter coming on or something like that.
